How to write a CV: useful tips

Your CV should be focused. It can't be generalized. When a recruiter selects a specialist, he must clearly understand what position the job seeker is applying for. On average, it takes about 10 seconds to look through a CV, so the necessary information should catch the eye at once.
Anything you mention in your CV must be relevant to the job you're applying for. Your marital status, courses taken in a completely different direction, student part-time work are unimportant for the recruiter.
Don't use cliches. They are banal and useless. For example, replace "communicative" with "I get along with others."
It is categorically forbidden to lie in the CV, so write only the truth and do not copy the formulations from third-party sources, make a CV yourself.
Add a cover letter. This greatly increases the chances of a subsequent interview. In the cover letter you should explain why:
  • you are an ideal candidate;
  • exactly this company is attractive to you.

How to write a CV: structure example

This example shows that 6 main sections must be included in a CV:

  1. CV Header with Contact Information
    use an appropriate e-mail address;
    you do not need to include your date of birth or a photograph ( relevant to European countries and the USA).
  2. Personal Profile (on the example it is called "about me")
  3. Work Experience
    list your experience in reverse chronological order;
    don't forget to add key achievements. They should be relevant and concrete.
  4. Education
  5. Skills
    lay emphasis on hard skills but don't forget about soft skills because recruiters are also interested in your personality.
  6. Additional Sections (optional)
    Here you may include your hobbies but only those that are meaningful to the employer.

Typical mistakes

Grammar and spelling mistakes. Double-check your text. Always. No matter how well you speak the language, no one is immune from typos and inattention. Even the most insignificant error will alert the recruiter.
Blurry wording, trite phrases. Always specifics is needed. Add more facts and figures, especially in points: responsibilities, achievements, skills.
Too long/short CV. In the first case, the recruiter will not spend his time reading it and most likely will give preference to another applicant, in the second case there will be too many additional questions for the candidate to find out the answers to which there is no time. The optimal size of the CV: 1-2 pages.
Unreasonably high salary. If you are applying for a salary that is much higher than the average - you need justification.
Gaps in career history. If you haven't worked for a long time - justify why.
The CV doesn't match the vacancy. Rewrite your CV, constantly improve it, update. Do not forget that for each specific position a separate CV should be made.
An attempt to write a creative CV due to non-standard phrases, bright graphic design, different fonts. This is inappropriate, forget about creativity in the portfolio.
